Mop Cost Per Clean Calculator
Divide a mop kit’s cost, including refills, by how many cleans you expect from it, and compare two options on the same schedule. Plain arithmetic, nothing stored or sent.
What does each clean cost?
Enter your own prices. The sample numbers are examples only; leave Mop B blank to check just one mop.
Steam mop: $3.29 per clean
| Mop | Mop (per clean) | Refills (per clean) | Per clean | Per year | Over 3 yr |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam mop | $0.29 | $3.00 | $3.29 | $342.00 | $1026.00 |
| Spin mop | $0.19 | $0.25 | $0.44 | $46.00 | $138.00 |
Spin mop costs less per clean by $2.85, about $888.00 over 3 years at 2 cleans a week.
You mop about 104 times a year (2 a week).
Counts the mop price spread over its life plus refill pads or heads. It leaves out electricity, water, cleaning solution and your time, and it assumes the mop lasts the years you entered.

How the calculation works
Cost per clean is the mop price divided by the number of cleans you expect over its life, plus the cost of one pad or head for that clean. The first part is mop price ÷ (cleans per week × 52 × years). The second is (refill pack price ÷ pads in the pack) ÷ cleans per pad. It is plain arithmetic on your inputs, not a measured or tested figure.
Disposable and washable pads
If you use a pad once and throw it away, enter 1 for cleans per pad. If you wash and reuse a pad or head, enter how many cleans you expect from it before you replace it. Reusable pads usually cost more up front but are spread over many cleans, which is often where a low cost per clean comes from. The number of washes you get depends on the product and how you care for it, so use your own experience or the maker’s guidance rather than a guess.
What the number leaves out
This counts the mop and its refills. It does not include the cleaning solution, the water, the electricity a steam mop uses, a bucket, or your time. If those matter to you, add them to the refill price or compare them separately. A low cost per clean also says nothing about how well a mop cleans a particular floor.
How the mop type changes the picture
Steam mops often have a higher purchase price and use washable pads, while spray and flat microfiber mops can be cheap to buy but lean on replacement pads. Spin mops sit in between, with replacement heads that last for a number of cleans. Use the calculator to test your own setup rather than assuming one type is cheaper.
Choosing the years
A longer expected life lowers the mop’s share of each clean. Be realistic: if you replace mops every couple of years because a handle breaks or a motor gives out, use two. Changing this one number shows how sensitive the result is.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate the cost per clean of a mop?
Add the mop’s price spread over the total number of cleans you expect, to the cost of the pad or head used for each clean. This page does both steps for you from the numbers you enter.
Are washable pads cheaper than disposable ones?
They often cost less per clean when you really do reuse them many times, but it depends on the price of the pad and how many washes it lasts. Enter your own numbers to compare.
What number should I use for cleans per pad?
Use 1 for a disposable pad. For a washable pad or head, use the number of cleans you realistically get before replacing it, based on your experience or the maker’s guidance.
Does the calculator include cleaning solution or electricity?
No. It covers the mop and its pads or heads only. Add other costs into the refill price if you want them counted.
Does a lower cost per clean mean a better mop?
No. It only compares what you spend. How well a mop cleans, how easy it is to use and whether it suits your floor type matter just as much.
